Enjoy these audio highlights from past editions of the Mighty Sound of the South (.wav files).
November 14, 1964 - Alma Mater - This recording is from the very last Tiger home game at Crump Stadium. Starting in 1965, games were played at Memphis Memorial Stadium (now the Liberty Bowl).
September 23, 1968 - Halftime Opener - This fast-tempo, high-spirited opening number is typical of how the MSU Band started its halftime shows in the 60's and early 1970's. The voice you hear at the beginning is longtime Memphis radio personality and Tiger P.A. announcer Fred Cook.
October 30, 1976 - Sousa Spectacular - The Mighty Sound of the South's first visit to the Louisiana Superdome featured this memorable medley of marches. Sousa Spectacular proved so popular that it was used again in 1981, 1985 and 1988.
October 29, 1983 - In The Stone - Fans at Vanderbilt Stadium must have wondered what hit them after this high-powered concert tune. An outstanding band and the artificial turf combined to make this one of the very best on-field recordings of the band available.
September 20, 1986 - Gustav Mahler Symphony #7, 5th Movement - The MSU Band of the 1980s regularly gave football fans a taste of the classics. This ambitious presentation of Mahler's music is one of the best examples. The ending chord is still reverberating inside the Liberty Bowl.
November 17, 1990 - Armed Forces Salute - With Operation Dessert Storm looming, 70,000 Florida State fans at Orlando's Citrus Bowl gave the Mighty Sound of the South a standing ovation for this timely medley of service anthems.
just for laughs...
September 9, 1989 - Kroger - This proved once and for all that the band would do ANYTHING to support its university. And yes, that is a jet you hear flying overhead.
and, finally...
September 25, 1982 - This clip requires no explanation to any Tiger Band Alum.
