Springtime marching ensembles are a wonderful introduction, not to replace concert season, but to enhance the overall music program. This gives many students, who wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity, a chance to make a significant
contribution toward the success of an ensemble in the spring. It can also decrease the reliance on summer band camp to teach or refresh students on marching fundamentals. Winter Guard and Indoor Percussion events provide a great means for students to showcase their specialized skills and talents.

The University of Memphis Band Alumni Chapter is proud to be the host of The 2008 Mid-South Indoor Percussion and Color Guard Competition, at the Elma Roane Field House on the U of M campus, Saturday, March 29th, 2008.
Winter Guard and Indoor Percussion are the fastest growing of the pageantry arts and have become a substitute for the loss of many arts programs in schools. For most school music programs, springtime leads to a temporary retirement of band members' marching shoes in pursuance of concert ensembles instead. Many color guard participants come from dance backgrounds and do not necessarily play instruments. Additionally, many concert ensembles occasionally have an excess of percussionists.
