Lights...camera....ACTION! For the past two years, the University of Memphis Band Alumni chapter has been pleased to present highlights of The Bandmasters Championship on regional public television via the Memphis PBS affiliate, WKNO Channel 10. The program has also been made available to other PBS affiliates throughout the southeast.
In 2006, the leadership of The Bandmasters Championship decided to invest some of the contest's proceeds into a TV broadcast. This decision was clearly in line with two of the six Contest Objectives:
To provide recognition to students for their hard work and achievement, and to the professional music educators who instruct them.
As well-attended as The Bandmasters Championship has been in recent years, television provides us with a means of exposing thousands more people to the experience of marching band competition. In fact, the number of persons tuning in each year was at least eight times our total contest attendance! Many viewers haven't attended (recently or ever) a band contest and know little or nothing about the incredible amount of work, talent and pride that goes into each band's performance.
Our 2006 broadcast was 90 minutes in length and featured full performances of five top-scoring bands, plus highlights of most other bands. Our 2007 show, although limited to 60 minutes, featured highlights from every participating band and was produced by our partners at WHBQ, Fox13 in Memphis. Hosts in 2007 were WHBQ's Joey Sulipeck and Dr. Nicholas Holland, Assoicate Director of Bands at The University of Memphis.
The Bandmasters Championship is proud of its participating bands, and is committed to promoting their excellence to the widest public audience possible!
